General Scholarship Information
The scholarship office is dedicated to helping undergraduate students with
scholarship needs. The scholarship office awards undergraduate students with
need-based scholarships, processes all scholarships for the university and
hosts a list of outside scholarships that are available.
At Texas Tech University, scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic
achievement and/or financial need. Financial need is rarely the primary factor
considered, but it is often used to make a decision among equally qualified
finalists. Many scholarships have additional qualifications such as:
-high school attended;
-current major;
-county you live in; and
-extra-curricular activities etc.
Texas Tech University distributes over $15 million in scholarship money every
year. These scholarships are from both institutional and private sources.
Texas Tech generally handles the following types of scholarships:
INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Institutional scholarships are general scholarships awarded by university
colleges, academic departments, and the financial aid department at Texas Tech.
Institutional scholarships are provided by scholarship donors.
SCHOLARSHIPS TO QUALIFY FOR NON-RESIDENT FEE WAIVERS
A non-resident student may be eligible to pay in-state tuition rates if he or
she receives an institutional competitive scholarship award or awards totaling at least $1,000
for the academic year and/or summer for which the student is enrolled. A
scholarship is considered “competitive” if an official Texas Tech University
scholarship committee awards the scholarship and the recipient competes against
other students, including Texas residents, in order to be selected for the
award.
MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2009-2010
Merit scholarships are awarded on the basis of a student’s entrance exam scores
and high school class rank. A student who has scored at least a 1250 (SAT) or
28 (ACT) and was in the top 10% of his or her graduating class is eligible for
a merit scholarship. Awards begin at $2,500 per year. More information about
merit scholarships can be found here.
PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS
Private scholarships – or Third Party Scholarships - are scholarships that are
not controlled or awarded by the university, but by the donors themselves. The
money is awarded by third party donors and then sent to Texas Tech to be
disbursed.
More information on how to apply for these scholarships can be found
